FLEE AS PART OF THE ELEFEST PROGRAMME 2011……
SUNDAY 2nd October 2011 // 2pm − 7pm
Elefest Closing Party // 7pm - 12pm
Live demonstration, performance, workshop, exhibition & artist talk all rolled into one…
”A bit like a biology lesson from your favourite substitute teacher…who is really an artist.”
To coincide with the FLEE Market on the 2nd of October, as part of theElefest Programme, FLEECollective are pleased to present Charlie Gates, D.I.Y TAXIDERMY-LIVE & WORKSHOP.
The Elefest started in 2003, programming a series of events showcasing locally made films. Elefest now includes a wide variety of the arts, including live music events, digital media, dance and performance in which Corsica Studios FLEE are pleased to be a part of and are hosting theElefest Closing Party 2011.
Creating bizarre and surreal sculptures from her warped imagination, dark humor twists the natural with the artificial, beauty and death collide with nostalgia and borderline insanity. Provocative, uncomfortable yet intriguing, Gates is not a traditional taxidermist, she is an artist. Taxidermists preserve the illusion of life, Gates’ work preserves the reality of death.
WORKSHOP // 3PM - 5PM
Throughout the day in the FLEE CollectivePop-Up gallery space, Ten lucky people will have the chance to take life into their own hands in a special D.I.Y Taxidermy workshop.
The Ten lucky people taking part in the workshop will be selected through a ballot. If you want to get involved with this amazing opportunity then please register your interest here.
PERFORMANCE, DEMONSTRATION, ARTIST TALK // 6PM
In the evening Charlie will talk an audience through her D.I.Y process, with emphasis being held heavily upon the D.I.Y aspect of her work. Delivered in a ‘shopping channel’ style, she gives handy hints and tips for using basic everyday objects, where to source animal parts legally and personal preservation methods, giving a unique insight into the seemingly dark art of taxidermy and the mind of an artist.
The audience is encouraged to participate and generally become involved in the creation of a new artwork. An exhibition of previous and new works will run alongside the show; surreal and bizarre assemblages, sculptures of recent finds.
